Our Impact So Far

Since opening in January 2020, we have diverted

20,800 pounds of food waste from landfill

And created healthy soil products with it. Let's divert even more together :)

Why Compost?

There are TOO MANY reasons to compost…which is actually why we founded The Compost Group. In our mind, composting has the most benefits to the community, our health, and the planet than any other community sustainability endeavor we could do.

REDUCE METHANE FROM THE LANDFILL

Did you know that the ONLY thing in the landfill that actually emits methane into the atmosphere is the organic waste? Over a 20-year timeframe, methane is 86 TIMES more potent of an atmospheric warming agent than carbon dioxide. As a pollutant, it has the capacity to snowball our planet into accelerated climate change. But, by focusing our climate change efforts on reducing our methane emissions first, it buys us time to reduce the rest of our emissions

.

REDUCE OUR DEPENDENCE ON THE LANDFILL

San Diego has been edging near capacity of their landfills for years now. Recent estimates say without ‘zero waste’ policy, we will reach capacity by 2022 and will need to add more landfills. We don’t want more of that in our backyard! That is why we are trying to be a part of the zero waste solution 🙂

INCREASE OUR HEALTH AND FOOD NUTRITIONAL VALUE

Our food has a higher nutritional value when it is grown with healthy soils instead of high nitrogen chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and even the anti-fungals commonly used in organic agriculture. When we eliminate the chemicals and allow our soil to be a living organism, it is full of all the microorganisms that our bodies are made up of. Its like growing food in a batch of probiotics that our bodies love..and need!

.

REBUILD OUR SOIL SO IT CAN SAVE THE EARTH!

We’re not even joking here. Healthy, living soil sequesters more carbon, grows more productive plants, helps plants fend off pests without the need for pesticides, create a network of fungus that helps to send nutrients to neighboring plants that need help.

.

CREATE & STIMULATE THE LOCAL, CIRCULAR ECONOMY 🙂

"I love knowing that we are sending our food scraps off to become something useful instead of something harmful"

  • Miranda, Cardiff

  • "I had been interested in composting for a while now, but as a busy person living in a small apartment, there were not a lot of options. Once I found The Compost Group I signed up immediately and could not be happier! They give you everything you need, a bucket that can go next to the trash can in the kitchen and a cute magnet that lets you know what things are compostable, and all you have to do is put the bucket outside of your door once a week! Naomi, the founder, is also super approachable and will answer any questions you have about what can and can't go in the compost. After the first week of composting, we had almost nothing in our trash can and I love knowing that we are sending our food scraps off to become something useful instead of something harmful. I could not recommend The Compost Group more!"

California's Organics Recycling Regulation

California passed a progressive bill in 2016 to move the state closed to zero waste.

AB 1826: Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling Bill "require(s) a business that generates a specified amount* of organic waste per week to arrange for recycling services for that organic waste in a specified manner."

*As of January 2020, that law applies to businesses that create 2 cubic yards or more of ANY commercial soil waste. 2 cubic yards is smaller than most dumpsters, so if your business creates one dumpster of any landfill waste per week, this regulation now applies.

.

We saw this regulation coming down the pipe, and decided to create a program for our community where we can recycle the organic waste locally into a healthy soil product instead of methane gas to power trucks hauling waste long distances. We also are a small, local company happy to work with you to create a program that works for you and your kitchen.
