How the Home Composting Program Works

Composting your food waste yourself can be a fun way to get your hands dirty and see first-hand how the decomposition process works. But, it takes time, space, and patience to experiment with different “recipes” (mixes of nitrogen-based and carbon-based organics) which may not work for everyone’s schedules. That is why TCG has started up the residential compost pickup service. If you don’t have the time to compost your own scraps at home, that doesn’t mean they need to be sent to landfill!

This blog will give you insight into how the program works.

Step 1: Sign up for the residential composting service online

Once you sign up, TCG will drop off your own 5-gallon bucket to your doorstep within 24 hours

Step 2: Decide how you want to collect your food waste

In my own kitchen, I put a small container on my counter to put kitchen scraps in each day. Once it is filled, I dump the whole thing into the 5-gallon bucket and secure the lid. You can use Tupperware, paper lunch bag (which we can also compost for you), or even put your 5-gallon bucket right in your kitchen.

Step 3: Place the bucket on your doorstep!

On your neighborhood’s pickup day (the day of the week is in your initial onboarding email), just place your bucket outside your door by 8:30am, and it will be replaced before 11am.

TIPS:

  • If you have anything that you think might get extra smelly during the week, either email info@thecompostgroup.com to schedule an extra pickup, or just freeze that portion of your waste (in a brown or plastic bag is fine), and put it into the bucket the day of your pickup.
  • Line the bucket with the provided plastic bin liner. This will keep the buckets from getting smelly over time and protect our workers from the COVID outbreak.

As always...we thank you!! <3
